A brass bell from the 'Caledonian Princess, 1961', cast with name and date, decorated in black enamel, fitted with clapper and replacement ropework handle, mounted on a bespoke solid mahogany stand, bell 6 1/2in. (16.5cms) high, stand 63in. (160cms) high; together with a black and white watercolour drawing of the Caledonian Princess at sea, signed Hutchinson, 27 x 19in. (68 x 48cms), framed. NB The Caledonian Princess was built for the Caledonian Steam Packet Company by William Denny Bros., Dumbarton, working the Stranraer-Larne route. In 1968 she was passed to the British Rail Sea Link fleet running in the English Channel, Channel Islands and Irish Sea, retiring in 1981. From 1984-2007 she was permanently moored on the River Tyne and re-named the Tuxedo Princess as a nightclub, then in 2008 she was again re-named Prince and moved to Greece, and was then scrapped in 2009 at a yard in Turkey. PROVENANCE This bell, and the following three lots, have come from the Estate of John G. Thomson, The Manager of The British Transport Management 'Scotland' Ltd. Thomson previously served with the Royal Engineers 1944-1948 before working on the railways. In 1954 he was selected for three management training courses (see Lot 475 for ledger). He took over the Freight and Passenger Departments in 1965 as Traffic Manager on the Caledonian Steam Packet Co. in Gourack, becoming Manager of the Company in 1969.
